8 free Data Visualization frameworks not only for charts
Recently I have spent a lot of time investigating Data Visualization framework/library to develop a new visualization library that generate automatically rich interfaces from various data.

List-up articles such as the above help me with the research, but almost all of the libraries are used only for charts in the wide Data Visualization area. When we say charts, we may remember only about eight kinds of charts. It’s not amusing! In our daily life, we are exposed to more visualizations like a map, catalog, newspaper, and beautiful art works, not only charts.
So I listed up famous frameworks that are not narrowed down to charts: treat Data Visualization more fundamentally.
SIMILE Widgets Exhibit
This is a framework for a faceted search released by MIT Media lab. Template languages extending HTML enables rich search result interfaces. It has supported List, Table, Map, Timeline, Timplot as widgets so far. Exhibit builds up elaborate data source so visitors which visit the site using it can change the interface by switching the tabs and manipulate the adequate search functions they want.
SIMILE Widgets project offers Timeline, Timeplot and Runway(Coverflow) as independent APIs. These including Exhibit are developed as an opensource software now.

ProtoVis
ProtoVis is a visualization framework developed by Stanford Visualization Group. Unlike other visualization libraries which separate each visualization (ex.bar chart, line chart, map and others), it treats in more detail parts like a line, a point and a circle and develop a visualization combining these parts. It may be similar to Processing.js. You can make a visualization with a lot of flexibility using examples from DEMOs.
Prefuse Flare (Flash)
Prefuse Flare based on Prefuse is a famous Data Visualization framework too. Though Prefuse itself was for Java, Flare is implemented with Flash. Becuase it designs elaborately data structure as SIMILE does, this framework is so flexible that it is easy to switch visualizations and to import new visualizations. Neat interaction and animation by Flash are also good points.
Style Chart
This is a framework in which the server generates visualization images when it receives a request from client. If you are afraid that you can’t deal interaction because of image, don’t worry. Style Chart enables interaction with javascript. It is rare to have radar chart (spider chart).

CanViz
CanViz is a javascript version framework of Graphviz: famous Data Visualization framework. It is maily adequate for graph data. Bad point is that we couldn’t set up animation and action as far as I can see DEMO. It seems to be a framework just for visualizing data.
Axiis (Flex)
This is a framework using Adobe Flex. Interactive actions are elaborately build. The following DEMO “Browser Statistics” atracted attention. Axiis has greate latitude like ProtoVis and Prefuse Flare so we can develope various kinds of visualization.

Infovis
Infovis is a famous library for drawing graph data. It offers each visualization independently: has five visualizations. Basically Infovis treats only graph data including tree data but it enables us to show weighted graph (the connections among the nodes are weighted: thin or bold) / directed graph data (the connections has a direction: -> or <-).
By the way I don’t know the relationship with InfoVis Toolkit
RGraph
RGraph is a framework using HTML5. It will be difficult to adopt RGraph because of HTML5 but it has high-quality visualizations so it must be a promising framework.
